Mukilteo voters will have their say on Automated Ticketing Machines. Unless…

…the City Council takes the overwhelming response to our petition drive as a mandate and votes to pass the petition language without putting it on the November ballot. It’s the subject of a special public meeting on Wednesday, July 7th. (You’re invited!) As reported by the Mukilteo Beacon, Mayor Marine stated, “I can’t speak for the council, but the voters will have their say.”

We learned today that the Snohomish County Auditor’s office has officially certified sufficient petition signatures to put Mukilteo Initiative 2 on the November 2010 ballot. It didn’t come without a fight!

As you may recall, we were notified that our first batch of petitions delivered contained a number of disqualified petition signers. The legal process allows petition circulators a specified period of time in which to deliver additional petitions.

We initially calculated this second deadline to be Thursday, June 24th. However, based on the completion check date by the Snohomish County Auditor’s office, the actual deadline was determined to be Monday, June 28th. We met the date for second submission and turned in plenty of petitions – over 1000 when we only needed 407!

Then, in a suspicious turn of events…

…the mayor, city attorney, and City Council met on Monday, June 28th in a secret session – canceling their regularly scheduled public meeting. Some have alleged that the – as yet undisclosed – subject matter of the meeting was to determine if the Council could avoid delivering the second batch of petitions to the Auditor’s office, railroading our petition efforts.

Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that the mayor and council – who used tricky tactics to get the authority for Automated Ticketing Machines pushed through while a known opponent was out of town – may have been willing to stoop to holding secret meetings to try to stop the voters from getting a chance to weigh in. Nonetheless, you would think that they would understand by now that the citizens of Mukilteo are interested in open, honest and transparent government.

What’s next? We celebrate!

WHO: Volunteers, supporters, petition signers
WHAT: A “Qualification Celebration”!
WHEN: Thursday, July 1st 6pm-8pm
WHERE: Mukilteo Lodge

Join your fellow volunteers and neighbors to celebrate our success! Please help get the word out, anyone is welcome. We’re a volunteer organization which means we can’t afford to provide refreshments, but we hope you’ll come for the company!

Mukilteo Initiative 2 In A Nutshell

  • Reverses the decision by the Mukilteo City Council to install red-light cameras and speed cameras (they unanimously reversed their decision already)
  • Requires 2/3 of the council and a majority vote of the people if they ever try again
  • Removes the profit-motive for cameras by limiting the fines to the cost of the least expensive parking ticket in Mukilteo (Everett Herald reports that’d be $20)
  • Mandates an advisory vote any time cameras are proposed.

We’ve been keeping tabs on the Establishment Protection Act, or HR 5175 – the DISCLOSE Act. As we had let you know before, we thought the vote was going to come Wednesday but that didn’t happen. We have received word from our folks on the Hill that the bill is on today’s schedule.

We just finished faxing our Washington State Representatives another demand to vote against this dangerous legislation, signed by the hundreds of people that signed our online Oppose DISCLOSE petition.

Let’s keep the pressure on! Add your voice to the uproar,  please call the Capitol Hill switchboard at 202-224-3121 to give your Washington State Congressman a piece of your mind!

Washington State Democrats Say “No!” to Liberty

June 23, 2010 by · 2 Comments
Filed under: News, Party Politics

As you know, your Washington State Campaign for Liberty is a non-profit, non-partisan, educational and political organization.

We are also an action organization, a movement of not just talkers but of doers! Our membership is not content to sit on the sidelines and let others steer our course. To that end, though we promote no one political party over another, we encourage our membership to participate in the political process. How better to take control of our political destiny than to use the tools expressly created for that purpose?

Washington State Campaign for Liberty has already attended a couple of statewide party conventions this year – the Washington State Libertarian Party and the Washington State Republican Party.

We believe that freedom is popular! It is a message that brings us together. Liberty is too big to fit in any one political box.

This coming weekend is the Washington State Democrat Party State Convention, and we planned to be there. In fact, we had booked a table and have been busy at work preparing information on:

  • Audit the Fed – HR1207/S604- this is an issue we’ve been focusing on this year. HR 1207 is co-sponsored by a number of our Congressmen including Representatives Inslee-D, Baird-D, McDermott-D, Smith-D, Reichert-R, Hastings-R, and McMorris Rodgers-R. Lack of transparency in our banking and financial system has led to the abuses of power on Wall Street. The Federal Reserve is the private bank that enabled our government to print the money for financing corporate favors, financing the American empire and occupations abroad, and fund undeclared wars.
  • Bring the Troops Home – we believe that Ron Paul was right,
    “If the justifications for war were wrong;
    If the war is going badly;
    If we can’t afford the costs, both human and economic;
    If civil war and chaos have resulted from our occupation;
    If the reasons for staying are no more credible than the reasons for going;
    THEN…..
    Why the dilemma?  The American people have spoken, and continue to speak out, against this war. So why not end it?  How do we end it?  Why not exactly the way we went in?  We just marched in, and we can just march out.”

BUT, earlier this week we were informed that we were un-invited to — not even welcome at the State Convention by the Democrat leadership! Even though our organization is non-partisan, and even though we have members that are lifelong participants in the Democrat Party, their leadership doesn’t want the Liberty message at their convention. We were disappointed to hear that partisanship is more important to the Democrat leadership than the issues at hand.

We hope they will change their minds, we’d love to attend. Apparently, as of this point, the Washington State Democrats aren’t interested in the freedom message. What a shame!
